    Lab Test

    What methods are used:

Blood tests with results while you wait:

    • Strep — Rapid strep test (RST) is a rapid antigen detection test (RADT) widely used in clinics to assist in diagnosing bacterial pharyngitis caused by group A streptococci (GAS), sometimes called strep throat.
    • Flu – Rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT) detects the virus in nasal secretions.
    • Pregnancy — Tests can confirm pregnancy as early as 10 days after a missed period, or even earlier. A quantitative hCG test (beta hCG) measures the exact amount of hCG in your blood.
    • Urinary tract infection – Dipstick kit tests for a substance (called nitrite) produced by most UTIs. Certain types of strips also test for white blood cells (leukocytes).
    • Blood sugar levels – May be done two ways: After you have not eaten anything for at least 8 hours (fasting) At any time of the day (random) 2 hours after you drink a certain amount of glucose (oral glucose tolerance test)

    Collection of urine samples:

    • Drug screens – Used to detect illegal and some prescription drugs in the urine.
    • Pregnancy confirmation – If you’re pregnant, the test can usually detect the hCG hormone in your urine about 10 days after your first missed period. This is similar to a home pregnancy test.
