A pulmonary function test is a non-invasive test that shows how well the lungs are working. The test measures lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange. With this information, your healthcare provider can diagnose certain lung disorders.
We provide spirometry, a pulmonary test done to assess asthma, smoking-related lung damage, and shortness of breath.
How the Service is Done
The spirometry pulmonary function test may be performed as part of a routine physical. The test can also diagnose you with a health problem such as:
- Allergies
- Respiratory infections
- Trouble breathing from injury to the chest or a recent surgery
- Chronic lung conditions, such as asthma, bronchiectasis, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis
- Asbestosis, a lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibers
A pulmonary test can assess asthma, emphysema, and other chronic lung problems. The test may be used to check lung function before surgery or other procedures if patients have lung or heart problems, are smokers, or have other health conditions.
What Methods are Used
A spirometry pulmonary function test involves breathing into a mouthpiece hooked up to a small electronic machine.
Possible Side Effects
This pulmonary function test is safe and quick for most people. However, there is risk of:
- Dizziness during the test
- Feeling short of breath
- Coughing
- Asthma attack brought on by deep inhalation
Some people should not have a pulmonary test, including anyone with recent eye, belly, or chest surgery. Also, a person with chest pain, a recent heart attack, or an unstable heart condition should not have a pulmonary test.
